M468 and DIAS

Postby ams514 » Wed Sep 30, 2009 9:14 am

I have a registered DIAS and was wondering if an M468 can be modified to work with a DIAS? Will the m468 accept an M16 FA carrier and fire controls?

Thanks,
Allen

Slippery Slope..... I'd suggest NOT soliciting for such advice on this forum. But that's just me.

I'd believe modern receivers are dimensioned to prevent the use of these drop-in auto conversion parts.

AR receivers were originally M16 design(s) minus one hole drilled for installation of the auto-sear pin. These drop-in conversion devices were designed to simply sit inside this type of lower reciever and are held in place without the use of any pins, meaning no modification of the receiver was required.

I'd also say that any rifle using non-auto fire control group parts and bolt carrier, the open area within the lower receiver required for use of a DIAS (or Lightning Link) doesn't exist in today's AR recievers. At least that's what I'd offer up. With respect to ARs, If you see one being used, it's either an old receiver with M16 fire control group parts/bolt carrier installed or they've milled the reciever to accept the drop-in auto part and replaced it's internals with auto-fire capable parts.

Lastly, the sustained rate of fire for the M468 is about 12-15 rounds per minute. Anything above that and the rifle is subject to severe overheating. If the barrel temperature raises to the "cookoff point" a round in the chamber may detonate (cookoff) in as short a period as 10 seconds.

Not a slippery slope. It's a legally registered DIAS with the ATF which I currently use in an AR-15. Perfectly legal. People legally drop them in AR-15's with with FA carriers all the time and have their AR-15 milled out/modified if by a gunsmith if needed to accomadate. Simply asking if the same is possible with the m468. No different than putting a registered fleming sear into an SA HK 94/91/93. As long as it's a legally registered machine gun sear, not an issue.

Also read on this forum that the cookoff is a myth. A moderator on this forum from Barrett actually disputed that one, before the barrett forums changed to the new desinged forum. The gun was originally made to be a possible replacement for the US military M4 from what i understand so surely it wouldn't cook off after 10-15 rounds FA.

Actually, I stand corrected about cookoff, I do remember reading about the cookoff in the manual, but the gun would ever be fired 140? rounds continuous. There was a barrett moderator that disputed this, I believe.

Legal or not, we've been repremanded in the past by our forum moderator(s) about this type of discussion. Actually, it might have been this exact topic, come to think of it ... Anyhow, they don't want it here. Sorry.
