New Toy: 338 Lapua

Postby ersc » Thu 21 Apr, 2011 3:44 am

Hi Folks

Got a new toy to play with...

Got it on sale at Cabelas... Just fits in the Pelican Case...

Took the scope off my Barrett 99 and put it on the 338 Lapua, and dressed up the M99 with a new Nightforce 5.5-22x56 NXS.

Nice rifle. :cheer:

I have a suggestion tho. Reverse your rings so the nuts are on the left side (they're backwards, now). :poke:

Then remount your scope rings so you have the widest distance between the rings (on your rail) so the rear and front rings are spaced farther apart on your scope tube. The front ring could be farther forward; and the rear ring a little farther back on the tube. At least it looks that way, to me.... :det:

Let us know how you like the .338LM. It's a snappy round to shoot....
:headbang:

One last suggestion. It seems like you have some "soft foam" in your pelican case. If so, flip the foam pieces around so your rifle scope is on the handle side. Then when you carry it in the case, the scope will be on top - and you won't be banging your scope caps on the hinge side of the case. Don't flip the rifle tho - just spin it 180deg. you still want the bolt on the top, when you open the case.
Just saying....

ERSC

I gotta tell you the Shadows advice is dead on.

N170 88.4 gr
Federal Large Magnum primers
300gr Lapua Scenars

I use an COAL of 3.709

2720 FPS

Don't worry about about 100 yards I notice that the Bullets aren't stabilized at this distance.
.3MOA at 600 and 1000 yards.

Best of Luck
Ian

Hi Folks

Thanks

(1) Flipped the case foam around, now the scope won't be bounced (great catch!!!)

(2) Will exchange Barrett rings for the Ultra-High version

(3) Hope to pick up reloading dies and supplies this Saturday... Will stick with 300 grain bullets...

Nice rifle! How's it shooting MOA wise?

FWIW... I seen a box of Hornady 338 Lapua Mag ammo for $99 a box at Outpost Armory.

How much are you getting ammo for in 338 Lapua Mag?

Nice rifle! I have the same one and it was in the pelican case upside down as well (Thanks Shadow). Please let us know how it shoots when you get it dialed in.I am having problems with group size at 100 yards (Retumbo/300gr Bergers in Lapua brass)So I will try Ians advice and take it out to 300yds(thanks Ian) and see what I come up with. The only useful advice I can offer is to stick to Lapua brass, Hornaday brass stuck in my rifle at any loads hotter than 2500fps. Good Luck!

So how are you liking the 110 frame? I also have this in 338 Lapua and in 300 WIN. I have only shoot around a 100 rounds out of the 338 and maybe 40 rounds out of the 300. So far I like them and have a pretty good MOA.

What case are you using if it is a pelican do you by chance have the number of the case?

Great weapon.
