Swaging Brass 50BMG to 416 Barrett-Problems

Postby rick44 on Sun 31 May, 2009 4:29 pm

You guys seem to be quite resourceful. I need some help. I received a set of 5 dies from CH4D to reduce and reform 50BMG brass to 416 Barrett. They seem to resize quite well, almost magical but I‘ve run into a problem that I don’t know what to do about. After reducing a 50BMG neck to a 416 Barrett the thickness of the brass at the neck is .035” whereas a normal 416 Barrett neck thickness is .024”. The inside diameter is not even close to what it needs to allow a 416 bullet to be seated. The diameter is so small that I cannot even get a neck expander ball into the shell casing to expand the inside diameter of the neck. I've tried a case neck turning tool with a 50 cal mandrel so when I swaged the shoulder down from the 50 BMG shoulder into a 50 BMG neck I trimmed and turned the neck so that the neck cylinder was very thin, ie .016”-.024”. Because of the inconsistencies of the inside of the neck due to the swaging there seemed to be quite a bit of variation (run out) which is not good. I continued with the forming process and I still ended up with a 416 neck that was up to .032" thick in some locations and impossible to seat the 416 projectile. I'm afraid to turn the outside of the neck down any farther when it's sized at 50 cal. but I don't know how to maintain the proper inside neck diameter so the projectiles will fit. Please see the photo below which probably better depicts the problem. I don't have a lathe.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Have you addressed this problem or do you have any ideas for me?

Bender,

Do you have a source for one of those 416 Barrett inside-the-neck reamers? Are the reamers usually sold with trim dies as well?

Thanks,

Rick

no I don't, I'm not there yet. I would have to google it and read up on it.

Get yourself a Foster 50 BMG case trimmer, http://midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=390841, and the .400 neck reamer that works with it.

It is a lot of work but can be done by hand this way. After you run the case in the trim die and whack it off, ream the neck out. Then run the case thru the Full Length Size Die with the expander ball.

I've found some of the brass from Barrett to have the same issues. Way out of round and thickness...
